Artisanal ceramic teapot: why it transforms your tasting experience

In Brief
- A fine tea leaf deserves a fine vessel.
- So-called memory clays (unglazed inside) are porous.
- HOLLIN's tea sommelier expertise: artisanal ceramic teapot decoded by a purist Tea House, with no added flavorings, based in Sartrouville (Île-de-France) and shipping its grand crus worldwide.
A good tea leaf deserves a good vessel. Artisanal ceramics are not decorative objects: they are tasting tools, with their own chemistry and thermal properties.
Memory clay: porosity that works for you
So-called memory clays (unglazed inside) are porous. Over the course of herbal teas, they absorb a minute fraction of the tea’s essential oils. This phenomenon is known as seasoning.
The result: the more you use a teapot with the same family of tea, the more it enriches your herbal teas subsequent brews. One therefore dedicates one teapot to a Oolong roasted tea, another to a black tea from China, without ever mixing them.
Thermal inertia that stabilizes extraction
The thickness of a artisanal teapot helps maintain a stable temperature throughout thetime. For a delicate green tea, this stability prevents sudden fluctuations that abruptly release tannins and disrupt the liquor.
This is also what makes ceramics suitable for herbal teas short Gong Fu Cha infusions: the same water, poured three times in succession, reaches the teapot with very little temperature variation.
Recognising an honest artisanal piece
A visible throwing mark beneath the foot, slight asymmetries, a glaze applied by hand: these are hallmarks, not flaws. Industrial perfection sells an image; craftsmanship sells a use.
We select our teapots from independent workshops. You can come and handle them at our counter in Sartrouville, before dedicating each one to a specific family of tea.
