Celadon is not a color

Celadon is not a color. It is a variation.

In the tradition of Ru ware porcelain, tones are never fixed. They are described as the color of the sky after rain, a pale blue, almost white, or shades that resist precise naming.

These colors are not conceived as exact tones, but as natural phenomena.

The sky does not have a single color. It shifts throughout the day, from the horizon to the higher light.

Celadon follows this same logic: it does not reproduce a color, it interprets a variation.

This is why each piece is different.

During firing, temperature variations inside the kiln create unpredictable transformations in the glaze. This phenomenon, known as « yao bian », ensures that no two pieces are ever identical.

But beyond color, this is not the essential point.

What defines Ru ware porcelain is its texture.

A surface that is soft, deep, almost alive. A touch that recalls polished stone, or the skin of jade.

At HOLLIN, we do not seek perfect objects.

We seek objects that are right: able to exist over time, to change with the light, and to remain quiet in use.

Like tea, they are never fixed. They transform with the gesture.
