    Observing a Leaf

When observed through a botanical lens, a tea leaf reveals more than its surface.

The bud of Camellia sinensis is not accidental. Protective scales guard it through winter, while within, young leaves continue to differentiate and unfold.

Unlike many woody plants that flush once a year, the tea plant is capable of repeated growth. Each new cycle begins at the axillary buds- hidden at the base of each leaf.

The first spring leaves, shaped by slow winter dormancy, carry a distinct concentration of flavor. This is one of the reasons early spring teas are so valued.

In a cup of tea, we do not only taste the season, but a system of renewal.

Before understanding, tea is flavor. After understanding, it becomes time.
